Abstract
From steam distilled leaves of Juglans regia L. 26 terpenoid substances (21 monoterpenes, two sesquiterpenes, one diterpene and
two compounds originated from terpenoids) and eugenol have been isolated. Additionally,
23 hydrocarbons with a chain length from C19 to C31 and 21 fatty acids (C6-C20) including geranic acid have been detected. The substances have been identified by
comparing TLC, GLC correlating methods, and partly by GLC-MS. There are at least 50%
of typical components of essential oils present, another nearly 24% contain the hydrocarbon
fraction and nearly 27% the fatty acids. It is assumed that the steam distilled product
contains more sesquiterpens and other substances originated from esters of fatty acids,
which were yet not identified. A main component is β-eudesmol (∼ 10%). Leaves harvested
in autumn produce a distillation product of good yield with a constant composition.
The product of steam distillation acts as an antifungal. Its properties favor the
external use in folk medicine of the drug Folia Juglandis.
